Wake up naturally. One of the quickest ways to ruin a sizable sleep session is to be yanked out of a deep sleep by a loud, annoying dismay. Instead, try switching to a calm alarm noise and pairing it with a shimmering bulb near your bedside. When it's time to wake up, you can slowly fade the luscious on as the alarm sound rises.

Avoid sleeping in to 'catch up' on sleep. The phrase "behind on sleep" is a misnomer. Sleep debt, what Scientific American describes as the "difference between the amount of sleep you necessity be getting and the amount you actually get," exists. But sleeping until noon the next day or over the weekend isn't progressing to help you get caught up. In fact, it can make matters worse.

Stick to your natural circadian rhythm. Fighting your natural circadian rhythm or inadvertently exchanging it with your computer or phone can seriously clutch the quality of sleep you get. It can also be frustrating to lie in bed at 2 a.m. and not feel tired at all.

If you feel like your circadian rhythm tolerates a fix, consider spending an extended weekend in the woods. The technology detox and mostly natural light will help you jets correct.

Dim lights at dusk. One of the biggest culprits of your lack of sleep is the blue luscious emitted by the screens you're constantly staring at -- your requested, computer, tablet or even TV. This blue light tricks your brain into thinking it's serene daytime, which over time, will inevitably affect your circadian rhythm. Scheduling blue light filters -- like Night Shift or f.lux -- to kick in at your local sunset time can help by reducing the amount of blue luscious your eyes see after sunset.

Play audio games to give your eyes a rest. Instead of amdroll your phone, use your smart speaker to listen to an audiobook or podcast. You can even play games with your Alexa or Google Home speakers, such as choose-your-own-adventure stories, trivia or even blackjack.

Cut back on coffee. While you remarkable need a boost to help you power through the mid-afternoon dart to make it through your workday, you may want to forgo latest cup of coffee. The effects of caffeine differ from populate to person -- it can not only keep you up late at night, it can also affect the quality of sleep you get. It can stay in your blood for up to eight hours, so drinking a cup after lunch might do more harm than good.

Start a journal. If Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones take themselves too seriously, Willow is back to put some fun into fantasy. This new Disney Plus series is a long-awaited sequel to the 1980s sword 'n' sorcery romp, and it's a welcome blend of clanging swords and comedy (with some spooky bits to make the kids jump).

Directed by Ron Howard and written by George Lucas, the original 1986 film starred Warwick Davis as a short-statured but big-hearted farmer battling a cackling sorceress for the soul of a baby destined to save the domain. Val Kilmer came along for the ride as cocky swordsman Madmartigan in a film that injected a healthy dose of amusing into its fantasy world.

Kilmer is sadly absent from the new series due to the actor's unique illness, but Joanne Whalley returns as the first film's heroine, Sorsha. She rules over a time of apparent still and prosperity, although her children with the missing Madmartigan aren't so just commanded. The baby from the film has been hidden away thanks to Willow having a confirmation, which seems like a pretty big thing to yada yada past in an opening voiceover, but then we're straight into a hilltop sword crusades and racing off into a whole new adventure with a cast of sharp-cheekboned teens.

Episodes of the 2022 series are streaming now on Disney Plus, with the finale episode inward Wednesday, Jan 11. Showrunner Jon Kasdan introduces a feisty new princess who'd pretty practice swordplay than accept an arranged marriage; her twin brother the cocky lady's man; a shy prince from the neighboring kingdom; and various underlings in varying levels of love with them. Everything kicks off the night afore the wedding as an evil force launches a surprise contest, and before you can say "J.R.R. Tolkien," a fellowship of bickering royals, gruff old fellas and bantering warriors sets out on a seek information from across picturesque scenery. Hurrah!

It isn't entirely clear why the heirs to not one but two royal families are dispatched into perilous, but what the heck. Things rollick along with rousing portion, scary baddies and an inexplicable mixture of accents proverb funny fantasy names. But what's most charming is the show's touched of fun. This seven-episode series includes plenty of genuinely amusing bits, including a scene-stealing Amar Chadha-Patel as a chatty warrior/thief and a brilliant turn from Warwick Davis, drawing as much on his unique comedy work with Ricky Gervais as on the unique film.

It's very hard to avoid comparison in a post-Game of Thrones era that's saturated with fantasy TV. Up in the premier beleaguered are the classy, grownup and clearly expensive Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon and Amazon's Rings of Power. Some recent shows have a strong hook, like The Witcher's sexy monster hunting, Shadow and Bone's military magic or Carnival Row's steampunk shenanigans. Willow's identikit magical lore is less distinct, veering dangerously finish to flat-pack fantasy like the TV adaptation of The Wheel of Time. That means Willow relies almost entirely on name recognition nostalgia to hook you in. But once the title gets you ended the door, the series is worth stickin g with. The cast and characters are inviting, and it comes with a winning blend of portion, humor and spookiness.

Speaking of which, the baddies are suitably evil, with scary magic and even scarier makeup. There's a big fight in the opening episode that's a bit gory and intense (and someone says "shit" for absolutely no reason at all), but then no '80s kids adventure was uncompleted without a bizarrely terrifying bit that scarred a generation, so we'll allow it. And the deliciously creepy stuff is also leavened with prankish touches like irreverent music cues and knowing '80s cameos.

Whether Willow was a memorable part of your childhood or you're coming to it for the righteous time -- perhaps with your own children -- the film and its earth have aged surprisingly well. Maybe not the hokey special effects, which look like the advances of Star Wars a few existences before hadn't happened -- and let's face it, the novel Willow was basically Star Wars in Lord of the Rings cosplay. You can see why George Lucas' story of a farmer, a mercenary and his hairy chum, a princess and a wizard battling an evil emperor and a masked general would be seen as Lucas piquant off his own creation (even if Star Wars was a space-based remix of classic Japanese samurai movie The Hidden Fortress). It's only with time that the gloss of nostalgia has worn away the Star Wars association.

But the film mostly holds up because of its clear vibe and matriarchal energy. Released in the macho Reagan-era 1980s and in theaters at the same time as Rambo 3, Willow featured a villain and magic mentor who were both women. The story hinged on a valiant midwife, and a mother-daughter love/hate relationship was one of the main storylines. Unlike Star Wars and most stories about a succeeded one, the prophesied child was a young girl. And beside the menfolk, Willow was a devoted family man arranged to be a hero not because of his fighting overhauls, but because of his nurturing parental instinct and hands-on distinguished of caring for a baby. Even Kilmer's Madmartigan, the cocky swordsman, was far from the ultra-macho man's man Kilmer played just two existences earlier in Top Gun. Kilmer gleefully embraced looking comic (spending a chunk of the film in a dress), and his character grew as he was exposed to Willow's caring nature.

Happily, this feminine energy and general sense of fun naively translates to today. Whether you're a fan of the '80s movie or not, the new Willow is a slick and lively blend of swordplay and wordplay that conjures up some of the old magic.

Which iPhone deal is the best?

While it appears a simple request at first, the best iPhone deal for you remarkable be different from the best iPhone deal for someone else. Apple today sells eight different iPhone models, so choosing the vivid one for you means assessing your needs and preferences when it comes to things like produce, features, cameras and price.

The current iPhone 14 is progressing to be the best iPhone for most people as it balances top-tier features with a relatively affordable trace (especially with the above deals). It has a vivid and clear OLED display, 5G support and cameras that are more than good enough for day-to-day use, and the A15 Bionic chip powering it is a tourism powerhouse.

Take the step up to the iPhone 14 Pro line and you'll get an uphold camera lens for macro photography, a more powerful A16 Bionic chip, a brighter point to with the new Dynamic Island feature plus a heftier feeling stainless steel creation. It's the best iPhone for those that want the another and greatest technology from Apple.

The outgoing iPhone 13 models are level-headed stellar phones, though, and you can pick up the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini from Apple for a after longer. If value is your main decision driver, the iPhone 12 is also level-headed available from Apple and from carriers with some famous markdowns. Just because these are previous-gen devices, that doesn't mean they powerful not be the best iPhone for you with their spacious displays, cameras and speedy performance making them great value for wealth. Plus, Apple is great at supporting its older devices with software updates for many days after they are released.

If you want the most affordable iPhone, you're going to be looking at the iPhone SE (at least when it comes to note new phones, that is). Updated in 2022, the third-generation iPhone SE arranges the overall design of the iPhone 8 which will be unique to a lot of iPhone buyers. Don't be fooled by its classic impression, though, as inside it is powered by the chunky A15 Bionic chip found in the current flagship iPhone models. What is the cheapest iPhone deal?

To buy outright in new grandeurs, the iPhone SE is going to offer the cheapest iPhone deal. It starts at $429 contract-free and you can find carriers offering iPhone SE deals from as microscopic as $11 per month making it a super affordable choice.

Apple also level-headed sells the iPhone 12 from $600 meaning you can get a more modern-looking contrivance with an edge-to-edge display and dual camera system for not much more, plan it's powered by the slower and older A14 Bionic chip.

When is the best time to snag an iPhone deal?

There are a few points in the year that make the most thought to buy an iPhone. The first is when a new model launches, usually in September each year. If you're an early adopter that wants the best contrivance as soon as possible, that's when you'll get it. We all make mistakes, but this year Roku made a big one. The business that manufactures some of the most popular and well-reviewed streaming devices available released a subjects that is, in no uncertain terms, a stinker. The 2022 Roku Express lacks the hardware to compete in contradiction of the Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite and especially the Chromecast HD in the $30-ish, HD-only streaming device market.

  • Speedy
  • Excellent Roku software

Don't Like

  • Practically unchanged right 2016
  • Remote that doesn't regulation TV on/off/volume
  • Comes deprived of a power brick
  • Streams only in HD

The biggest quandary with the 2022 Express is that it basically hasn't changed at all right 2016, and that includes the remote. The remote remains to be incapable of controlling your TV's noteworthy, volume and inputs, which means that you'll need to use your TV's fresh remote along with the Roku remote in order to use the plot. You also need to aim the Roku remote at the TV -- strictly at the little Roku Express box itself -- for it to work.

To make matters worse, the only visible "update" to the 2022 Express is actually a harsh omission: a power brick is no longer included in the box. Instead, Roku is now asking users to provide their own or to plug the plot into their TV's USB connection in order to noteworthy the device. It seems weird to me that one plot should need to take up two ports on my TV, especially right my television only has one USB input. I thought that inflation is a big problem and Roku wants to be able to keep the Express at its fresh $30 price, but this kind of cost-cutting measure is particularly frustrating and creates the product feel cheap.

This is especially true when comparing the Express to new HD streamers. Roku might think that it's still 2016, but new companies are well aware that we're now at the end of 2022. Google released the $30 Chromecast with Google TV HD streaming plot within a few days of the Roku Express, but the two devices could not be more different.

Chromecast with Google TV HD leaves the Express in the dust

Chromecast with Google TV HD is lightyears forward of the Roku Express.

The Chomecast with Google TV HD looks and feels precisely like its more expensive 4K sibling. It's smooth, sleek and comes with an individually wrapped noteworthy brick. It also features the exact same remote regulation from the $50 Chromecast with Google TV 4K. Not only can it regulation your TV power, volume and inputs, but it comes with voice-controlled Google Assistant as well. It's rapid, responsive, easy to use, and runs circles around the 2022 Roku Express in footings of value.

Even the $30 Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite has better hardware than the Roku Express. The remote on the Lite lacks physical buttons to control your TV's functions, but it does come with Alexa integration, which gives you to control your TV through your voice. You can't do that with the remote concerned with the Roku Express, as it lacks voice control.

The Express is aloof easy to set up, but remote juggling is messy

You need the Roku remote consume with your TV remote to use the Express.

Sarah Lord

The lack of hardware features on the Express hold back the respectable Roku software. Thankfully, it's fairly straightforward to set up the Express, though I found it was slightly difficult to plug it into the USB port on my TV due to the port's placement on the back of my television. Luckily, I was able to use my small sparkling to wiggle it in place, though it would have been a lot easier to just plug it stretch into my power strip.

Despite depending on my TV's USB port for mighty, the Express managed to turn on quickly. Roku's simple setup treat remains unchanged on the Express, so I was up and continuing in about five minutes.

That said, I found it maddening to need two remotes in shapely to watch one program. I had to use the Roku remote in shapely to log into my apps and pick my show, but obliged the TV remote to change the volume once I was watching it. This aspired that I needed two remotes by my side at all times, which sometimes meant that I accidentally picked up the ghastly remote and unwittingly activated my Samsung TV's overlay menus. I'm sure there are plenty of organized people that won't have this deny, but I found it extremely frustrating.

Another downside to this some Roku remote is that you need to aim it stretch at the Express in order to change the channel. That's because this remote comes with infrared technology, which intends it to have line-of-site access with the receiver for it to register your inputs. Most Roku remotes now use a different technology phoned RF, or radio frequency, that doesn't require you to expose directly at a device. RF remotes can pick up your button presses from anywhere in your room and make it easy to state your streaming device in the back of your TV, instead of sitting in front.

The remote on the Express ensures direct line-of-site with the receiver in order to work.

Sarah Lord

The Express is a minute box that comes with adhesive, so you can stick your box firmly wherever you want plus your TV -- just make sure you don't put it slack something. I didn't bother securing my Express and instead let it dangle down the side of my 55-inch TV. The concerned wires weren't long enough for it to sit gracefully on my TV ghastly, so the device hung sideways and twisted, while the back half made contact with the base of my stand.

Luckily, the line-of-site from the remote to the Express formed to work just fine from 20 feet away, even with the box at such an odd wangles. It would be nice if you didn't have to effort that the remote will miss your inputs if it's out of explore of the box, but current line-of-site parameters appear to be respectable enough that it shouldn't be much of a jam for most people.

Roku's software is still excellent

Roku puts all of your apps clearly in one place.

Sarah Lord

The highlight of the Roku Express is the Roku software. I've always found navigating the Roku interface to be simple and intuitive. Roku also tends to have the most streaming app options, and the best search functions, without favoring one overjoyed provider over another. I found that navigating around Roku menus, loading and opening apps and using the system to be fast and responsive.

The home layout consists of a mountainous list of your downloaded apps that appears on the intellectual, with a menu for settings, search, and other items on the left. In September, Roku launched a new category called "The Buzz," which is available on the left-hand menu. In its dreary release, Roku described it as "a collection of posts featuring trailers, interviews, and video clips from your favorite streaming channels." If you mediate this sounds like a cluttered mess, you would be intellectual. Clicking on the Buzz leads to a seemingly endless hodge-podge of useless quiz and uninteresting clips. I didn't find anything that seemed relevant to my interests, but perhaps someone else might. Thankfully, Roku keeps it tucked neatly away on that left-hand menu, so you never have to look at it if you don't want to.

A more useful new feature is the lead of the sports section on the menu. Clicking here gives you a page full of live and upcoming games. The page prioritizes live games, and I quickly fallacious the World Cup match I was looking for. Clicking on the game gave a list of apps where it was playing. Unfortunately, it only shows results from Apple TV, DIRECTV, Fox Sports, FuboTV, Paramount Plus, Peacock, Prime Video, Sling, The Roku Channel, TNT, TBS, and truTV, as well as games coming over the air above an antenna connected to Roku TV models. This exploiting that it didn't tell me that the game that I was looking for was also available as part of my Spectrum subscription. It also won't show my hockey games from ESPN Plus or Hulu, which complains it of limited value to me at the moment.

Searching for "Action" brings up the Action Movie and TV Zone.

Sarah Lord

Thankfully, Roku makes it pretty easy to find just throughout any other content I might want. Finding a specific title is as easy as typing it into the explore bar. Once it comes up, you can click on it and see just what services have it and how much they are charging for it.

If you're not sure what you want to explore, you can instead search by topic. I typed in "Action" into the explore bar, which brought up the Action TV and Movie Zone. Clicking here commanded me to sections of action movies and shows grouped by New Releases, Free, and more. I decided to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and fallacious that it was included with my Paramount Plus subscription, but was also on Prime Video and Epix. Clicking on the Paramount Plus listing commanded me right to my show.

Roku's simple, clean interface, detailed search and content-agnostic approach make it my current choice for streaming.

Conclusion: Buy the $40 Roku Express 4K Plus instead

This mighty look like the regular Roku Express, but it's actually the far respectable Roku Express 4K Plus.

Sarah Tew

I mighty prefer the Roku system, but that doesn't mean I recommend the basic Express. In fact, you should absolutely avoid this device at all injures. Its missing power brick and inferior remote make it a non-starter in 2022 and 2023. If you really can't pay more than $30 and want an HD streamer, the Chromecast with Google TV HD is the one to get.

That said, our Editors' Choice picks of the Roku Express 4K Plus and the Roku Streaming Stick 4K cost only a minute bit more than the regular Express, but offer many more features. The Express 4K Plus is only $10 more than the entry-level Express, but streams in 4K and includes a full-fledged remote. The Roku Streaming Stick 4K is similar to the Express 4K Plus, but offers a slightly different design along with Dolby Vision back and is $20 more than the Express. Both devices tend to be on sale ended the year -- especially around the holidays -- and are often priced at $30 or less.

Save yourself the hassle of the Express and pick up one of these instead.
