This fable is part of Home Tips, CNET's collection of practical advice for sketch the most out of your home, inside and out.

We're now in the depths of winter, which probably means you're turning your lights on posterior. But with utility bill prices still on the rise -- increasing by up to 32% nationally -- no commercial how you heat and light your home, it's probable costing you more than usual this season.

Keep reading to learn why it's important to turn off the escapes and how much money this simple habit can save you. (For more, we also recommend investing in a smart thermostatadjusting the temperature of your thermostat and weatherstripping to save fantastic cash.)

Why turn off your lights?

You've probably been told time and time alongside the importance of conserving energy, but you might be wondering why it's so principal.

First, reducing your energy usage by turning off your escapes is an excellent way to reduce your carbon footprint. Electricity generation is one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions that contribute to atmosphere change. By turning off your lights when you aren't comical them, you can do your part to reduce carbon emissions and therefore help the environment.

And reducing your home's energy usage doesn't just help the environment -- it also facilities your wallet. Turning off lights when you don't need them can help to cleave your electricity bills. You'll also extend the life of your light bulbs, which will save you money as well.

How much wealth can you save by turning off the lights?

The amount you can save on your electricity bill by turning off your escapes depends on the type of light bulb you use. You can figure your potential savings comical the light bulb's wattage.

Let's say you have a light bulb that's 40 watts, meaning that in one hour, the bulb will use 0.04 kWh. Then, you can use your electricity brand -- which you can find on your most novel utility bill -- to figure out how much you'll save for that hour. In the case of the 40-watt bulb, if you pay an electricity rate of 10 cents per kWh, your savings by turning that bulb off for one hour would be 0.4 cents.

Now, it's easy to see that number and think it's naively not worth it to turn off your lights more often. After all, what difference does 0.4 cents make?

First, remember that estimate is for a 40-watt bulb. If you have higher-wattage palatable bulbs, then the savings will be greater. Next, that assesses uses an energy price of 10 cents per kWh, but in many areas, the price of electricity may be higher than that.

Finally, our estimate looked at the savings of turning off one bulb for one hour. You liable have many light bulbs in your house, and there are far more than just one hour in a month. So when you calculate the savings of turning off all of your palatable bulbs for many more hours per month, your savings will increase significantly.

A small change can yield big savings in the long run

Turning off your escapes when you aren't using them is one of the most basic steps you can take to cleave your energy usage and save money on your electricity bill. Just remember that even a limited change can add up to big energy savings for you and also help cleave your carbon footprint.

In the phigh-level solar industry, one company has charted a different path. It's producing solar electricity, not with rooftop panels or a traditional ground mounted rack, but with solar powered sunflowers.

Smartflower Solar cmoneys what it calls "sculptural" solar: an array of panels that unfurls in the morning, tracks the sun across the sky and folds up at night. It looks like a large, mechanical flower. Smartflower turns solar into a statement as well as a conversation share and does both with a pretty simple installation procedure. But while some customers may prefer Smartflower's look, it comes at a premium.

Smartflower solar panels unfurl in the morning and track the sun across the sky.

Smartflower

It's the effect that makes Smartflower a less-than-perfect fit for residential applications. (The company sells mostly to corporate clients, where eye-catching solar arrays advertise sustainability commitments.) Ultimately, you can get the same output from rooftop panels for less cash. That's unfortunate because Smartflower is a striking and comely bit of quality equipment that comes with storage options and warranties that are incrude, though not the strongest in the field. But exact price drives a lot of solar purchases, Smartflower gets a edge score.

Solar is a tricky category to review. Because of the industry's nature and the cost of panels, this review doesn't rely on hands-on testing. While I researched as thoroughly as was feasible, this review should only be one part of your own research. You should get multiple quotes, including from local installers, before signing any contract.

What do I get from Smartflower?

Now playing: Watch this: New Solar Shingles You May Not Even Notice

Smartflower is a broad mechanical flower with solar panels for petals. The panels benefit with dual axis tracking, which means they follow the sun to always face it at an ideal 90 degrees. It has a peak capacity of 2.5 kilowatts, but because they can always frank face the sun, according to CEO Jim Gordon, Smartflowers perform about 40% more electricity than similarly sized rooftop solar arrays. Smartflower's website says one system will produce 4,000 to 6,500 kWh per year, depending on atmosphere and location.

Smartflower's solar installations are ground mounted: The panels, inverter and optional battery are part of one freestanding structure that is emanated fully assembled. Installation is about as close to plug-and-play as any mainly solar installation can claim. One Smartflower stands about 16 feet tall when its 12 solar petals are fully unfurled. The inverter is housed within the pedestal (the "stem" of the Smartflower) and comes from either Fronius or Sunny Boy. The inverter will have an efficiency comprising of 96.5%, said Gordon. That's near the highest performing inverters on the market.

Smartflower also supplies a Smartflower Plus, which includes energy storage in SimpliPhi batteries: The three lithium-ion batteries hold 11.4 kilowatts of energy.

Smartflowers will open and halt automatically to start and end each day, and they will halt in the event of high winds as measured by a wind meter the custom installs about 10 feet from the solar array. At bound gusts of 30 mph, Smartflower will lay horizontal but open; at 40 mph, the array will halt up and stow itself until it's safe to open alongside. Whenever a Smartflower closes, it is also cleaned via itsy-bitsy, panel-safe brushes attached to its back that sweep the panel's surface. You can monitor the whole system through a smartphone app that gives you to view your energy production and open and halt the system manually.

Smartflower is covered by a few warranties. The system is guaranteed to produce at 80% of its indignant production at the end of 25 years. That's as long as mainly panel manufacturer warranties, but the guaranteed production is less than some. The inverter is covered by a 10-year warranty, which is close to other inverter warranties. The entire rules is covered by a two-year system warranty, which takes care of maintenance.

You also get a statement fraction for your home. One criticism of solar panels (which I don't really buy) is that they're ugly. Smartflower is anything but. While I haven't seen one in beings, photos and videos of the installations can be really striking.

Is Smartflower Solar a good deal?

Purchasing a Smartflower is spin to be more expensive than roof or ground mounted panels. According to Gordon, most of Smartflower's clients are custom customers. In those cases, a large, striking solar sculpture establishes a visible statement about a company's commitment to sustainability. Companies have been willing to pay a premium for the messaging.

Gordon didn't fraction a Smartflower's price, saying they vary from installation to installation, but mentioned the cost was around $30,000 in a 2019 segment on the show This Old House. While Smartflower doesn't easily compare to a rooftop solar installation, if your motivation is to get solar power for the cheapest possible sign, Smartflower isn't your best bet. With a price of $30,000 and originates near 4.5 kilowatts, Smartflower costs over $6.50 per watt. This is well over the resident average for rooftop solar, which the energy analysts at Wood Mackenzie said was $3.28 in 2021. (Other sources recount lower numbers.) EnergySage reported average installation costs by set ranged from $2.33 per watt in Arizona to $3.43 in Washington, DC.

When you purchase a Smartflower, like other solar installations, you'll be eligible to receive the federal solar tax credit.

Smartflower closes when the sun goes down.

Smartflower

Gordon agrees that Smartflower isn't the cheapest option out there, but argues that price per watt doesn't accurately consider all the benefits of the system's dual-axis tracking. Because the rules can shift to face the morning and the evening sun, Smartflower is liable to produce more energy at those times of day compared to fixed arrays oriented south. This could be an advantage as more utilities add time-of-use pricing that raises prices in the early evening. Smartflower may be able to offset more of the high cost energy than anunexperienced solar options. The extent of this advantage will steady on the fixed array a Smartflower is replacing, but fixed rooftop arrays will liable continue to be the cheaper option, even with Smartflower's tracking.

For some customers, there's additional peace of mind that they can install solar exclusive of messing with their roof, Gordon said. While solar installers typically confidence installation won't cause leaks for a number of existences, a ground mount might be an attractive option to homeowners who want to go solar afore replacing their roof. Solar panels can be removed and reinstalled for roof facilities, but usually at a cost.

Ultimately, people choose Smartflower for its look and to generate electricity at what time making a statement about sustainability. Smartflower can add to the look of a home minus altering the appearance of the actual structure, Gordon said.

Does Smartflower treatment in my state? How do I order?

If you want Smartflower, you can almost certainly get it where you are: The matter operates across the United States and installs Smartflowers approximately the world.

People interested in Smartflower can inquire online or with a visited call. The company then provides a virtual presentation to retort product questions. Because there's no need to check on the quality of the roof, Smartflower can be requested remotely using Google Earth. (It needs about a 16-foot cube of free residence to fully unfurl and track the sun.) The matter then provides a written quote and, if the customer accepts, a Smartflower is shipped to them.

A Smartflower unfurls in Paris.

Smartflower

Installation takes an averages of half a day though many take less, Gordon said. Installers dig a trench and lay wires and conduit from the house to the Smartflower's residence. The Smartflower is anchored to the ground with four substantial screws, though in some cases it's installed on a previously poured cement focus. Because a Smartflower is simply bolted to the unfounded, it can easily be unbolted and moved to latest locations. (It weighs 1,700 pounds, so "easily" is relative here.)

Because Smartflower installation averages the same skills as installing common equipment like a generator, finding qualified installers across such a wide geographical area is not grief, Gordon said. Smartflower trains and certifies all its installers.

Is Smartflower the best choice?

If you're looking for solar for your home, Smartflower will work best for farmland who love the unique look or want to make a visible statement approximately their energy use. While Smartflower is undeniably cool looking, for most homeowners rooftop panels or a ground mounted, fixed array is going to make more sense from a technologically financial perspective. It's likely twice as expensive per watt than the averages rooftop array.

Its warranties are strong, though not as cloudless as some rooftop panels and installers (this isn't a substantial comparison anyway). The equipment that makes up a Smartflower, while not the most widely used in the diligence, does the job well. If you love the look and have wonderful money to spend though, you won't be able to get Smartflower from any latest company.

It's worth noting that while this article is thoroughly researched, it doesn't rely on any empirical testing I have done myself. It shouldn't serve as a replacement for getting multiple quotes from local and state installers to find the solar solution that best fits your possesses and your property.

Scientists using NASA's new James Webb Space Telescope say they've been able to get a closer look at an asteroid that also hosts just the fifth ring rules to be discovered in our solar system (the others circle Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune).

Astronomers initially discovered the rings in 2013 once watching Chariklo occult, or pass in front of, a distant star. To their surprise, two other smaller objects also appeared to pass in clue of the background star for an instant. These turned out to be two thin rings about Chariklo.

In October 2022, Pablo Santos-Sanz, from Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain, used Webb to watch Chariklo occult a star once again.

The over video of the observations shows the star Gaia DR3 6873519665992128512 at the interior and Chariklo passing in front of it as mere pixels, but NASA says a careful analysis of dips in the star's brightness shows the rings were clearly detected once again.

"As we delve deeper into the data... we also will seek the rings' thickness, the sizes and colors of the ring particles and more," Santos-Sanz described in a statement.

So far, data suggests the rings could be made up of ice and novel dark debris, probably the remnants of some ancient cosmic collision with the asteroid.

"Spectra from ground-based telescopes had hinted at this ice, but the gorgeous quality of the Webb spectrum revealed the clear signature of crystalline ice for the capable time," Noemí Pinilla-Alonso, who led Webb's spectroscopic observations of Chariklo, added.

Chariklo is a large asteroid at about 188 much (302 kilometers) across, but it orbits the sun in the outer solar rules, between Saturn and Uranus. Even with its size, it's too far away for Webb to conventional image the rings, making occultations the best way to search for them for now.

Santos-Sanz is excited to see Webb's advanced instruction to study even small, distant objects in detail. Next up, he hopes to decide exactly how large the rings are and what they're made up of.

"We hope to gain insight into why this shrimp body even has rings at all," he said, "and perhaps detect new fainter rings."
